How the Flight Time Calculator (Duration and Arrival Time) works
Time in the air is roughly the distance divided by the average ground speed. Taxiing, take-off, climb, descent and landing add time at lower speeds, so a fixed allowance (often 20 to 40 minutes) is added.
Arrival local time = departure time + flight time + the time difference between the two places. A result past midnight lands the next day.
Jet streams make eastbound flights across the Atlantic and Pacific noticeably faster than westbound ones; adjust the ground speed to reflect that.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Flight distance (km) | 5570 |
|---|---|
| Average cruise ground speed (km/h) | 850 |
| Extra time for taxi, climb and descent | 30 min |
| Departure time (local) | 09:00 |
| Time difference: destination minus origin (hours) | -5 |
- London to New York is about 5,570 km. At 850 km/h plus 30 minutes: 7 h 03 min.
- Leaving at 9:00 AM, you land at 11:03 AM New York time.
Result:
| Estimated flight time | 7 h 03 min |
|---|---|
| Arrival time (destination local) | 11:03 AM |
| Arrival on the origin clock | 4:03 PM |
| Flight time (hours) | 7.05 |
Frequently asked questions
Why is my airline's scheduled time longer?
Schedules include extra padding for taxi queues, holding and routing, so they are often 15 to 30 minutes longer than the air time.
How do I find the distance?
Use the great-circle distance between the two airports from the distance between coordinates calculator.
