How the Tile Grout Calculator (kg or lb Needed) works
Grout fills the joints around each tile. Per square metre the joint length is (L + W) ÷ (L × W) in metres per millimetre of tile, so grout volume = (L + W) ÷ (L × W) × joint width × depth (litres per m² with dimensions in mm).
Multiply by the grout’s density for the weight. Small tiles and wide joints use far more grout.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Tile length (mm) | 300 |
|---|---|
| Tile width (mm) | 300 |
| Joint width (mm) | 3 |
| Joint depth (mm, about the tile thickness) | 8 |
| Area (m²) | 12 |
| Grout density (kg/L) | 1.6 |
- 300 × 300 mm tiles with 3 × 8 mm joints use 0.256 kg/m².
- For 12 m²: 3.07 kg.
Result:
| Grout needed (kg) | 3.07 |
|---|---|
| In pounds | 6.77 |
| Per m² (kg) | 0.256 |
| With 10% extra (kg) | 3.38 |
Frequently asked questions
Why do mosaics use so much grout?
There are many more joints per square metre; 25 mm mosaics need around 10 times the grout of 300 mm tiles.
