Asphalt Calculator (Tons for a Driveway) by TheCalcTools
How the Asphalt Calculator (Tons for a Driveway) works
Volume = area × compacted thickness. Weight = volume × density; hot-mix asphalt is about 145 pounds per cubic foot once compacted. Divide by 2,000 for US tons.
Driveways are commonly 2 to 3 inches of asphalt over a compacted gravel base. Order about 5% to 10% extra.
The formula
Tons = L × W × (t ÷ 12) × density ÷ 2,000
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Length (ft) | 50 |
|---|---|
| Width (ft) | 12 |
| Compacted thickness (in) | 3 |
| Density (lb per cubic foot) | 145 |
| Price per ton | $110 |
- 50 × 12 ft at 3 in: 10.88 tons, about $1,196.
Result:
| Asphalt needed (US tons) | 10.88 |
|---|---|
| In metric tonnes | 9.87 |
| Volume (cu yd) | 5.56 |
| Material cost | $1,196 |
