How the EV Charging Cost Calculator works
Enter the battery size and the start and end charge levels.
Charging losses mean more energy is drawn from the wall than stored in the battery.
Cost is grid energy × price; range added uses your car’s miles per kWh.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Battery capacity (kWh) | 75 |
|---|---|
| Charge from | 20 % |
| Charge to | 80 % |
| Charging losses | 10 % |
| Electricity price per kWh | $0.16 |
| Vehicle efficiency (miles per kWh) | 3.5 |
- Stored energy = 75 × 60% = 45 kWh; with 10% losses the grid supplies 50.0 kWh.
- Cost = $8.00, adding 158 miles at $0.05 per mile.
Result:
| Energy from the grid (kWh) | 50.0 |
|---|---|
| Cost of this charge | $8.00 |
| Range added (miles) | 158 |
| Cost per mile | $0.05 |
Frequently asked questions
Why charge only to 80%?
Many EVs charge fastest up to 80%, and limiting the top charge may help battery life. Use the level that suits your trips.
Are public chargers more expensive?
Usually. DC fast chargers often cost two to three times as much per kWh as home charging. Change the price field to compare.
