Mulch Calculator by TheCalcTools
How the Mulch Calculator works
Enter the bed area and the depth of mulch.
Volume is area × depth in feet.
Divide by the bag size for the number of bags; buy by the cubic yard when you need more than about 5 yards.
The formula
Cubic feet = area × depth(in) ÷ 12Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Bed area (sq ft) | 250 |
|---|---|
| Depth (in) | 3 |
| Bag size (cu ft) | 2 |
| Price per bag | $4.5 |
- 250 sq ft × 3 in ÷ 12 = 62.5 cu ft (2.31 cu yd).
- That is 32 two-cu-ft bags, costing $144.00.
Result:
| Volume (cu ft) | 62.5 |
|---|---|
| Volume (cu yd) | 2.31 |
| Bags needed | 32 |
| Bag cost | $144.00 |
Frequently asked questions
How deep should mulch be?
Usually 2–3 inches around plants. Keep it away from stems and tree trunks to avoid rot.
