How the Knitting Gauge Calculator (Stitches and Rows to Cast On) works
Gauge is the number of stitches and rows in a measured square, usually 10 cm or 4 in. Divide by the swatch size to get stitches per unit, then multiply by the width you want.
Knit a swatch in pattern and block it as you will the finished piece before measuring; small gauge differences add up over a whole garment.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Stitches in 10 cm (4 in) of your swatch | 22 |
|---|---|
| Rows in 10 cm (4 in) of your swatch | 30 |
| Target width (cm or in, same unit as the gauge) | 50 |
| Target length | 60 |
| Gauge measured over | 10 cm |
- At 22 stitches per 10 cm, a 50 cm width needs 110 stitches.
- At 30 rows per 10 cm, 60 cm takes 180 rows.
Result:
| Stitches to cast on | 110 |
|---|---|
| Rows to work | 180 |
| Stitches per cm or inch | 2.20 |
| Rows per cm or inch | 3.00 |
