How the Fidya and Kaffarah Calculator (Missed Fasts) works
Fidya is paid by someone who cannot fast and cannot make up the fasts later, such as the chronically ill or very elderly: feed one poor person for each day missed, usually valued at the fitrana rate.
Kaffarah for deliberately breaking a Ramadan fast without excuse is fasting 60 consecutive days; if that is not possible, feeding 60 poor people for each such fast. Scholars differ on details, so confirm with a scholar.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Fasts missed that cannot be made up (fidya) | 10 |
|---|---|
| Fasts broken deliberately without excuse (kaffarah) | 0 |
| Cost of feeding one person for a day (fitrana rate) | $300 |
- Fidya: 10 × 300 = $3,000.
Result:
| Fidya | $3,000 |
|---|---|
| Kaffarah (feeding 60 people per fast) | $0 |
| Total | $3,000 |
| Days of fasting if kaffarah is fasted | 0 |

No. Fasts missed for a temporary reason are made up later (qada). Fidya applies only when making up is not possible.
