Typing Speed Calculator (WPM and Accuracy) by TheCalcTools
How the Typing Speed Calculator (WPM and Accuracy) works
Typing tests count a ‘word’ as 5 characters, including spaces, so speeds compare fairly across texts. Gross WPM = characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes.
Net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors per minute: net = gross − errors ÷ minutes. Accuracy here counts each error as one word out of the words typed.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Characters typed (including spaces) | 1250 |
|---|---|
| Uncorrected errors | 6 |
| Time taken | 300 s |
- 1,250 characters in 5 minutes = 250 words ÷ 5 = 50.0 gross WPM.
- 6 errors cost 1.2 WPM: 48.8 net WPM at 97.6% accuracy.
Result:
| Gross WPM | 50.0 |
|---|---|
| Net WPM | 48.8 |
| Accuracy | 97.6% |
| Characters per minute | 250 |
| Level | Average |
