How the Unix Timestamp Converter (Epoch Time to Date) works
A Unix timestamp counts seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, ignoring leap seconds. JavaScript and many APIs use milliseconds instead, which are 1,000 times larger (13 digits for current dates).
Enter your offset from UTC to see local time, for example +5 for Pakistan, +5.5 for India, +4 for the UAE, 0 for London in winter and −5 for New York in winter. The offset does not adjust for daylight saving automatically.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Convert | Timestamp to date |
|---|---|
| Unix timestamp | 1.7922e+09 |
| Timestamp unit | Seconds |
| Date | 2026-10-17 |
| Hour (0-23) | 9 |
| Minute | 30 |
| Second | 0 |
| Time-zone offset from UTC (hours) | 5 |
- 1792195200 seconds after 1970 is 2026-10-17 at 00:00 UTC.
- At UTC+5 that is Saturday, 17 October 2026 5:00:00.
Result:
| Result | Saturday, 17 October 2026 5:00:00 |
|---|---|
| In UTC | 2026-10-17 0:00 UTC |
| In milliseconds | 1,792,195,200,000 |
| Seconds until the 32-bit limit (19 January 2038) | 355,288,447 |
Frequently asked questions
What is the year 2038 problem?
Systems that store Unix time in a signed 32-bit integer overflow at 2,147,483,647 seconds, 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. Modern systems use 64-bit time.
Is my timestamp in seconds or milliseconds?
A 10-digit value is seconds; a 13-digit value is milliseconds.
