Video File Size and Bitrate Calculator by TheCalcTools
How the Video File Size and Bitrate Calculator works
File size = total bitrate (video + audio) × duration ÷ 8 bits per byte. A 10-minute video at 8 Mbps is about 600 MB.
To hit a size limit, divide the size in bits by the duration and subtract the audio bitrate. Container overhead adds roughly 1 to 2%.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Find | File size from bitrate |
|---|---|
| Video bitrate (Mbps) | 8 |
| Audio bitrate (kbps) | 192 |
| Duration (minutes) | 10 |
| Target file size (MB) | 500 |
- (8 Mbps + 192 kbps) × 600 s ÷ 8 = 614.4 MB.
Result:
| Result | 614.4 MB |
|---|---|
| File size (GB) | 0.61 |
| Size per hour (GB) | 3.69 |
Frequently asked questions
What bitrate should I use for 1080p?
Around 4 to 8 Mbps for streaming-quality H.264 1080p at 30 fps, less with HEVC or AV1. Platforms publish their recommended upload bitrates.
