How the SUVAT Calculator (Equations of Motion) works

For constant acceleration the five quantities s, u, v, a and t are linked by v = u + at, s = ut + ½at², s = ½(u + v)t and v² = u² + 2as. Any three determine the other two.

Use negative values for motion or acceleration in the opposite direction, for example −9.81 m/s² for gravity when up is positive.

The formula

v = u + at; s = ut + ½at²; v² = u² + 2as; s = ½(u + v)t

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

I knowu, a and t
Initial velocity u (m/s)5
Final velocity v (m/s)25
Acceleration a (m/s²)2
Time t (s)10
Displacement s (m)150
  1. Starting at 5 m/s and accelerating at 2 m/s² for 10 s: v = 25.0000 m/s and s = 150.0000 m.

Result:

Displacement s (m)150.0000
Initial velocity u (m/s)5.0000
Final velocity v (m/s)25.0000
Acceleration a (m/s²)2.0000
Time t (s)10.0000

Frequently asked questions

Do these work for falling objects?

Yes, ignoring air resistance: use a = 9.81 m/s² downward.
