Percentage Change Calculator by TheCalcTools
How the Percentage Change Calculator works
Enter the starting value and the final value.
The change is the new value minus the old value.
Dividing that change by the absolute old value and multiplying by 100 gives the percentage.
The formula
% change = (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Old value | 80 |
|---|---|
| New value | 100 |
- Change = 100 − 80 = 20.
- Percentage change = 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25.0%.
- This is an Increase.
Result:
| Change | 20.00 |
|---|---|
| Percentage change | 25.00% |
| Direction | Increase |
Frequently asked questions
Why is a 50% rise followed by a 50% fall not back to the start?
The second change is measured on the larger number. 100 up 50% is 150; 150 down 50% is 75.
What is percentage point change?
It is the simple difference between two percentages, for example from 4% to 6% is 2 percentage points, but a 50% relative increase.
