ERA and WHIP Calculator (Baseball Pitching) by TheCalcTools
How the ERA and WHIP Calculator (Baseball Pitching) works
Baseball writes partial innings as .1 and .2 for one and two outs, so 180.1 innings is 180⅓ innings. Enter full innings and extra outs separately.
ERA is earned runs per nine innings (seven in softball and many high-school leagues). WHIP is walks plus hits per inning pitched; lower is better for both.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Full innings pitched | 180 |
|---|---|
| Extra outs (0, 1 or 2) | 1 |
| Earned runs | 62 |
| Hits allowed | 158 |
| Walks allowed | 48 |
| Strikeouts | 201 |
| Innings per game | 9 (MLB, college) |
- 180 innings and 1 out = 180.333 innings.
- ERA = 9 × 62 ÷ 180.333 = 3.09. WHIP = (48 + 158) ÷ 180.333 = 1.142.
Result:
| Earned run average (ERA) | 3.09 |
|---|---|
| WHIP | 1.142 |
| Strikeouts per 9 innings | 10.03 |
| Walks per 9 innings | 2.40 |
| Strikeout-to-walk ratio | 4.19 |
| Innings as a decimal | 180.333 |
Frequently asked questions
What is a good ERA?
In MLB an ERA under 3.00 is excellent and around 4.00 is about average, depending on the season.
Why is 180.1 innings not 180.1 in the formula?
Each inning has three outs, so .1 is one third of an inning, 0.333.
