Emergency Fund Calculator by TheCalcTools
How the Emergency Fund Calculator works
List essential expenses only: housing, food, utilities, insurance, minimum debt payments.
Choose how many months you want to cover.
The tool compares the target with what you have and your monthly saving.
The formula
Target = essential monthly expenses × months of coverMonths = (target − savings) ÷ monthly saving
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Essential monthly expenses | $2800 |
|---|---|
| Months of cover | 6 months (typical) |
| Current emergency savings | $4000 |
| Monthly amount you can save | $400 |
- Target = $2,800 × 6 = $16,800.
- You still need $12,800; saving $400 a month takes 32 months.
Result:
| Target fund | $16,800 |
|---|---|
| Still needed | $12,800 |
| Months to reach it | 32 |
Frequently asked questions
Where should the fund be kept?
In an easily accessible savings account, not in volatile investments.
Why more than 3 months for the self-employed?
Income is less predictable, so longer cover reduces the risk of forced borrowing.
