Future Value Calculator (Lump Sum Plus Regular Deposits) by TheCalcTools
How the Future Value Calculator (Lump Sum Plus Regular Deposits) works
The starting amount grows to PV × (1 + i)^n. A series of equal payments grows to PMT × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i, multiplied by (1 + i) if payments are made at the start of each period (an annuity due).
i is the rate per period (annual rate ÷ periods per year) and n the number of periods.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Present value (starting amount) | $10000 |
|---|---|
| Payment each period | $200 |
| Interest rate per year | 6 % |
| Periods per year | Monthly |
| Years | 10 |
| Payments made at | End of each period |
- 10,000 now plus 200 a month for 10 years at 6% becomes $50,969.84.
- Of that, $16,969.84 is interest.
Result:
| Future value | $50,969.84 |
|---|---|
| Total deposited | $34,000.00 |
| Interest earned | $16,969.84 |
| From the starting amount | $18,193.97 |
| From the payments | $32,775.87 |
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between start and end of period?
Paying at the start gives every payment one extra period of interest, so the future value is higher by a factor of (1 + i).
