Walking Calories Calculator (ACSM Equation) by TheCalcTools

How the Walking Calories Calculator (ACSM Equation) works

The American College of Sports Medicine walking equation estimates oxygen use from speed (m/min) and grade: VO₂ = 0.1 × speed + 1.8 × speed × grade + 3.5 ml/kg/min. Each litre of oxygen burns about 5 kcal.

The walking equation is intended for speeds of about 3 to 6 km/h. Results include resting metabolism; the net figure shows only the extra energy of the activity.

The formula

VO₂ = 0.1 × S + 1.8 × S × G + 3.5 (S in m/min, G as a fraction); kcal = VO₂ × kg ÷ 1000 × 5 × minutes

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Speed5
Incline (grade)0 %
Time (minutes)30
Body weight70
  1. 2.5 km in 30 minutes at 70 kg: 124 kcal (3.4 METs).

Result:

Calories burned (kcal)124
Distance (km)2.50
Calories per km50
Intensity (METs)3.4
Calories above resting (kcal)88

Frequently asked questions

Is this more accurate than a fitness watch?

Both are estimates. The ACSM equations are well validated for steady treadmill exercise; outdoor terrain and individual efficiency change the real figure.
