Percentile Calculator (From Data) by TheCalcTools
How the Percentile Calculator (From Data) works
The value at the p-th percentile is found by sorting the data and interpolating at position (n − 1) × p ÷ 100, the same rule as Excel’s PERCENTILE.INC.
The percentile rank of a value is the share of the data below it, counting values equal to it as half. A rank of 75% means the value is higher than about three quarters of the data.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Your data | 55, 61, 64, 68, 70, 72, 75, 78, 81, 84, 88, 93 |
|---|---|
| Percentile to find | 90 th |
| Value to rank | 78 |
- With 12 values, the 90th percentile is at position 11 × 0.9 = 9.9: 84 + 0.9 × (88 − 84) = 87.60.
- Seven values are below 78 and one equals it, so its percentile rank is (7 + 0.5) ÷ 12 = 62.5%.
Result:
| Value at that percentile | 87.6000 |
|---|---|
| Percentile rank of your value | 62.5% |
| Values below your value | 7 |
| Count | 12 |
Frequently asked questions
Is the 90th percentile the same as the top 10%?
Yes. A value at the 90th percentile is higher than 90% of the data, so it is at the start of the top 10%.
What is the difference between a percentile and a percentage?
A percentage is a score out of 100. A percentile tells you where a score sits relative to everyone else. A test score of 70% could be the 95th percentile if the test was hard.
