Percent Yield Calculator by TheCalcTools

How the Percent Yield Calculator works

Enter the mass of product you actually isolated and the maximum mass the stoichiometry predicts.

The percent yield is their ratio.

A yield above 100% usually means the product is impure or wet.

The formula

% yield = actual ÷ theoretical × 100

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Actual yield (g)8.2
Theoretical yield (g)10.5
  1. % yield = 8.2 ÷ 10.5 × 100 = 78.10%.
  2. Product not recovered: 2.30 g.

Result:

Percent yield78.10%
Product not recovered (g)2.300

Frequently asked questions

Why is the yield below 100%?

Reactions may not go to completion, side reactions occur and some product is lost during separation and purification.

How do I get the theoretical yield?

Use the limiting reagent and the balanced equation to find the maximum moles of product, then multiply by its molar mass.
