Midpoint Calculator by TheCalcTools
How the Midpoint Calculator works
Enter the x and y coordinates of both endpoints.
The midpoint is the average of the two x-values and the average of the two y-values.
The length of the segment is also shown for reference.
The formula
M = ((x₁ + x₂) ÷ 2, (y₁ + y₂) ÷ 2)
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| x₁ | 2 |
|---|---|
| y₁ | 3 |
| x₂ | 8 |
| y₂ | 11 |
- mx = (2 + 8) ÷ 2 = 5.00.
- my = (3 + 11) ÷ 2 = 7.00.
- The segment length is √(6² + 8²) = 10.00.
Result:
| Midpoint x | 5.0000 |
|---|---|
| Midpoint y | 7.0000 |
| Segment length | 10.0000 |
Frequently asked questions
Can I use it with negative coordinates?
Yes. The averages work the same way for negative numbers.
How do I find an endpoint if I know the midpoint?
Rearrange: x₂ = 2·mx − x₁ and y₂ = 2·my − y₁.
