How the Lottery Odds Calculator works

Enter how many numbers are in the pool and how many are drawn.

The calculator counts the unordered combinations.

Your chance with one ticket is one divided by that count.

The formula

Odds = 1 ÷ C(n, k)C(n, k) = n! ÷ (k!(n − k)!)

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Numbers in the pool (n)49
Numbers drawn (k)6
  1. C(49, 6) = 49! ÷ (6! × 43!) = 13,983,816.
  2. So the jackpot odds are 1 in 13,983,816.

Result:

Possible combinations13,983,816
Odds of winning (1 in …)13,983,816
Probability0.00000715

Frequently asked questions

Does buying more tickets help?

It raises your chance in proportion, but the chance remains tiny. Ten tickets give odds ten times better, still around one in 1.4 million for a 6/49 game.

Are some number combinations luckier?

No. Every combination is equally likely, although popular patterns are more likely to be shared if they win.
