How the Leap Year Calculator works
In the Gregorian calendar a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years, which must be divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year but 1900 and 2100 are not.
The rule keeps the calendar year (on average 365.2425 days) close to the solar year of about 365.2422 days.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Year | 2028 |
|---|
- 2028 is a leap year: Divisible by 4.
- February has 29 days; the next leap year after it is 2,032.
Result:

|---|---|
| Days in February | 29 |
| Days in the year | 366 |
| Next leap year | 2,032 |
| Previous leap year | 2,024 |
| Rule that decides it | Divisible by 4 |
