LC Resonant Frequency Calculator by TheCalcTools
How the LC Resonant Frequency Calculator works
Enter the inductance in microhenries and the capacitance in picofarads.
Resonance occurs when the inductive and capacitive reactances are equal.
The characteristic impedance is √(L ÷ C).
The formula
f = 1 ÷ (2π√(LC))Z₀ = √(L ÷ C)
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Inductance (µH) | 100 |
|---|---|
| Capacitance (pF) | 100 |
- √(LC) = √(100 × 10⁻⁶ × 100 × 10⁻¹²) = 10⁻⁷ s.
- f = 1 ÷ (2π × 10⁻⁷) = 1.5915 MHz.
- Z₀ = 1,000 Ω.
Result:
| Resonant frequency (MHz) | 1.5915 |
|---|---|
| Angular frequency (Mrad/s) | 10.0000 |
| Characteristic impedance (Ω) | 1,000.00 |
Frequently asked questions
Where are LC circuits used?
In radio tuners, oscillators and filters, to select a particular frequency.
Does a real circuit resonate exactly here?
Close to it. Resistance, stray capacitance and component tolerances shift the real frequency and set the sharpness (Q).
