kVA to kW Calculator (Power Factor and Current) by TheCalcTools

How the kVA to kW Calculator (Power Factor and Current) works

Apparent power (kVA) is voltage × current; real power (kW) is the part that does work, kVA × power factor; reactive power (kVAr) is the rest, kVA × √(1 − PF²).

Generators and transformers are rated in kVA because their heating depends on current regardless of power factor. Three-phase current is kVA × 1000 ÷ (√3 × line voltage).

The formula

kW = kVA × PF; kVAr = kVA × √(1 − PF²); I(3φ) = kVA × 1000 ÷ (√3 V)

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Apparent power (kVA)50
Power factor0.8
Line voltage (V)400
SupplyThree-phase
  1. 50 kVA at PF 0.8 = 40.00 kW and 30.00 kVAr.
  2. At 400 V three-phase that draws 72.2 A.

Result:

Real power (kW)40.00
Reactive power (kVAr)30.00
Current (A)72.2
Phase angle (degrees)36.87

Frequently asked questions
