Genset Fuel Efficiency and Theft Check by TheCalcTools

How the Genset Fuel Efficiency and Theft Check works

Enter run hours and average load from the genset meter or logger.

Enter the litres actually issued or consumed in the same period and your benchmark efficiency.

The tool compares actual and expected fuel and flags large gaps.

The formula

Energy = hours × average kWActual efficiency = energy ÷ litres

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Running hours in the period120
Average load (kW)12
Diesel consumed (litres)520
Benchmark (kWh per litre)3.3
Allowed variance (%)10 %
Diesel price (PKR per litre)Rs275
  1. Energy = 120 × 12 = 1,440 kWh; actual efficiency = 2.77 kWh/L.
  2. Expected fuel at 3.3 kWh/L = 436 L; extra = 84 L (19.2%), worth $23,000.
  3. Result: Investigate: consumption is above the allowed variance.

Result:

Energy generated (kWh)1,440
Actual efficiency (kWh per litre)2.77
Expected fuel at benchmark (litres)436
Extra fuel used (litres)84
Variance from expected19.2%
Cost of extra fuel (PKR)Rs 23,000
ResultInvestigate: consumption is above the allowed variance

Frequently asked questions

What can cause high fuel use?

Low load (below about 30%), poor maintenance, injector or filter problems, leaks, wrong meter readings, or diesel theft. Check each before concluding theft.

How accurate is the check?

It depends on accurate run hours, load and fuel records. Use a fuel-level sensor or flow meter where possible.
