Electricity CO₂ Calculator (kWh to Carbon Emissions) by TheCalcTools
How the Electricity CO₂ Calculator (kWh to Carbon Emissions) works
Emissions = electricity used × the grid’s average carbon intensity. Grid intensity depends on how the electricity is generated and changes with season and time of day.
The car comparison uses the EPA gasoline factor and 7.5 L/100 km.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Electricity used per month (kWh) | 450 |
|---|---|
| Grid carbon intensity (g CO₂ per kWh) | 400 |
| Share from your own solar or green tariff | 0 % |
- 450 kWh × 400 g = 180 kg CO₂ a month, 2.16 t a year.
Result:
| CO₂ per month (kg) | 180.0 |
|---|---|
| CO₂ per year (tonnes) | 2.16 |
| Equivalent petrol-car km per year (7.5 L/100 km) | 12,267 |
Frequently asked questions
Should I use average or marginal intensity?
Average intensity describes your share of emissions; marginal intensity estimates the effect of using more or less. Carbon reporting usually uses average or supplier-specific figures.
