Cycling Speed from Cadence and Gear Calculator by TheCalcTools
How the Cycling Speed from Cadence and Gear Calculator works
Each pedal turn turns the rear wheel chainring ÷ cog times. The distance per pedal turn (development) is that ratio multiplied by the wheel’s rolling circumference.
Speed is development times cadence. Gear inches, an old way to compare gears, is the gear ratio times the wheel diameter in inches.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Cadence | 90 rpm |
|---|---|
| Chainring teeth | 50 |
| Cog (sprocket) teeth | 17 |
| Wheel and tyre | 700×25c (2105 mm) |
- Gear ratio 50 ÷ 17 = 2.94; development 6.19 m per turn.
- At 90 rpm: 33.4 km/h (20.8 mph).
Result:
| Speed (km/h) | 33.4 |
|---|---|
| Speed (mph) | 20.8 |
| Gear ratio | 2.94 |
| Development (m per pedal turn) | 6.19 |
| Gear inches | 77.6 |
Frequently asked questions
Which circumference should I use?
The tyre width changes the rolling circumference. For the most accuracy, roll the wheel one turn with your weight on it and measure the distance.
