How the Corrected Sodium Calculator (Hyperglycemia) works
High glucose draws water out of cells, diluting sodium. Katz (1973) estimated a 1.6 mmol/L fall per 100 mg/dL of glucose above 100; Hillier (1999) found about 2.4, especially above 400 mg/dL.
The corrected value shows what the sodium would be with normal glucose. It is a teaching aid for clinicians.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Measured sodium (mmol/L) | 132 |
|---|---|
| Blood glucose | 600 |
| Glucose units | mg/dL |
- Sodium 132 with glucose 600 mg/dL: 140.0 (Katz) or 144.0 (Hillier).
Result:
| Corrected sodium (Katz, 1.6) | 140.0 |
|---|---|
| Corrected sodium (Hillier, 2.4) | 144.0 |
| Glucose (mg/dL) | 600 |
Frequently asked questions
Which factor should I use?
Many references now prefer 2.4, the factor from Hillier’s experimental data; 1.6 remains widely quoted.
