Blood Volume Calculator (Nadler's Formula) by TheCalcTools
How the Blood Volume Calculator (Nadler's Formula) works
Nadler, Hidalgo and Bloch (1962) derived blood volume equations from height and weight: men 0.3669H³ + 0.03219W + 0.6041, women 0.3561H³ + 0.03308W + 0.1833 litres (H in metres, W in kg).
Adults have roughly 65 to 75 mL of blood per kg. A blood donation takes about 470 mL.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Sex | Male |
|---|---|
| Height (cm) | 178 |
| Weight (kg) | 80 |
- A 178 cm, 80 kg man has about 5.25 L of blood (65.6 mL/kg).
Result:
| Estimated blood volume (L) | 5.25 |
|---|---|
| Per kg (mL/kg) | 65.6 |
| 10% of blood volume (mL) | 525 |
| 15% of blood volume (mL) | 787 |
