How the A1C to Average Blood Sugar Calculator (eAG) works
HbA1c reflects average blood glucose over the past two to three months. The A1C-Derived Average Glucose (ADAG) study found eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × A1C − 46.7, the formula used by the American Diabetes Association.
Divide mg/dL by 18 to get mmol/L. The IFCC unit (mmol/mol) is used in the UK and Europe. The diagnostic ranges are the ADA thresholds for adults; a diagnosis needs confirmation by a clinician.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Convert | A1C to average glucose |
|---|---|
| HbA1c (%) | 7 |
| Average glucose (mg/dL) | 154 |
- A1C 7%: 28.7 × 7 − 46.7 = 154 mg/dL (8.6 mmol/L).
- IFCC: 53 mmol/mol; Diabetes range (6.5% or higher).
Result:
| Estimated average glucose (mg/dL) | 154 |
|---|---|
| Estimated average glucose (mmol/L) | 8.6 |
| HbA1c (%) | 7.0 |
| HbA1c (IFCC, mmol/mol) | 53 |
| Diagnostic range (adults) | Diabetes range (6.5% or higher) |
Frequently asked questions
What A1C target should I aim for?
Many adults with diabetes aim for below 7%, but targets are individual. Ask your clinician.
Why does my meter average differ from eAG?
Finger-stick averages depend on when you test. Conditions such as anaemia also affect A1C.
