Chocolate Toxicity Calculator for Dogs (Theobromine Dose) by TheCalcTools

How the Chocolate Toxicity Calculator for Dogs (Theobromine Dose) works

Chocolate contains theobromine (and some caffeine), which dogs break down slowly. The Merck Veterinary Manual reports mild signs such as vomiting, diarrhoea and thirst at about 20 mg/kg, heart effects at 40 to 50 mg/kg and seizures at 60 mg/kg or more.

Darker chocolate has much more theobromine: by USDA FoodData Central values, 70% to 85% dark chocolate has about four times as much as milk chocolate. Cocoa powder and baking chocolate are stronger still.

Individual dogs vary, and serious illness can occur below these levels. This is an estimate, not a diagnosis: if your dog ate chocolate, contact a vet straight away.

The formula

Dose (mg/kg) = grams eaten × theobromine per 100 g ÷ 100 ÷ body weight

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Dog's weight (kg)10
Chocolate eaten (grams)100
Chocolate type (theobromine per 100 g)Milk chocolate (about 205 mg)
Theobromine (mg per 100 g)1300
  1. 100 g of milk chocolate contains about 205 mg of theobromine.
  2. For a 10 kg dog that is 20.5 mg/kg: Mild signs likely (vomiting, diarrhoea, thirst): call your vet now.

Result:

Theobromine dose (mg per kg)20.5
Theobromine eaten (mg)205
Risk levelMild signs likely (vomiting, diarrhoea, thirst): call your vet now
Amount that reaches the mild threshold (g)98

Frequently asked questions

How much chocolate is dangerous for a 10 kg dog?

Mild signs start near 20 mg/kg, which is about 200 mg of theobromine: roughly 100 g of milk chocolate or 25 g of 70% to 85% dark chocolate.

Is white chocolate safe?

It has almost no theobromine, but its fat and sugar can still upset the stomach or trigger pancreatitis.

What will the vet do?

If ingestion was recent, vets often induce vomiting and give activated charcoal, then monitor the heart and give fluids.
