Engine Displacement Calculator by TheCalcTools

How the Engine Displacement Calculator works

Enter the cylinder bore (diameter) and piston stroke in millimeters.

Swept volume per cylinder is the area of the bore times the stroke.

Multiply by the number of cylinders for total displacement.

The formula

Displacement = π ÷ 4 × bore² × stroke × cylinders

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Bore (mm)86
Stroke (mm)86
Cylinders4
  1. Per cylinder: π ÷ 4 × 8.6² × 8.6 = 499.6 cc.
  2. × 4 cylinders = 1,998 cc = 2.00 L = 121.9 cu in.

Result:

Displacement (cc)1,998
Displacement (liters)2.00
Displacement (cubic inches)121.9
Bore to stroke ratio1.00

Frequently asked questions

What does a bore-to-stroke ratio above 1 mean?

An over-square engine has a larger bore than stroke, which tends to favour higher revs. Under-square engines favour low-end torque.

How does this relate to the badge on the car?

Manufacturers round the displacement to the nearest tenth of a liter, so 1,998 cc becomes a ‘2.0’.
