How the Tiered Cake Serving Calculator works
Enter the diameter of each round tier, or 0 if you have fewer tiers.
Servings are the top-face area divided by the area of one slice, for a standard 4 inch tall tier.
Choose the slice size, then check the total against your guest count.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Guests | 100 |
|---|---|
| Bottom tier diameter (in) | 12 |
| Middle tier diameter (in) | 9 |
| Top tier diameter (in) | 6 |
| Slice size | Wedding slice, 1 × 2 in (2 sq in) |
| Keep the top tier for the anniversary | No, serve all tiers |
- A 12 in tier: π × 6² ÷ 2 = 56 servings. A 9 in tier gives 31, a 6 in tier 14.
- Total 101 servings versus 100 guests: spare 1. Enough? Yes.
Result:
| Bottom tier servings | 56 |
|---|---|
| Middle tier servings | 31 |
| Top tier servings | 14 |
| Servings you can serve | 101 |
| Spare servings (negative = short) | 1 |
| Enough for your guests? | Yes |
Frequently asked questions
How big is a wedding slice?
About 1 × 2 inches on top and 4 inches tall, which is why a 12 inch round serves about 56.
Do real cakes match the formula?
It matches common bakery charts closely. Fruit cake and dense cakes are cut smaller; ask your baker for their chart.
