kVA to kW Calculator (Power Factor and Current) by TheCalcTools
How the kVA to kW Calculator (Power Factor and Current) works
Apparent power (kVA) is voltage × current; real power (kW) is the part that does work, kVA × power factor; reactive power (kVAr) is the rest, kVA × √(1 − PF²).
Generators and transformers are rated in kVA because their heating depends on current regardless of power factor. Three-phase current is kVA × 1000 ÷ (√3 × line voltage).
The formula
kW = kVA × PF; kVAr = kVA × √(1 − PF²); I(3φ) = kVA × 1000 ÷ (√3 V)
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Apparent power (kVA) | 50 |
|---|---|
| Power factor | 0.8 |
| Line voltage (V) | 400 |
| Supply | Three-phase |
- 50 kVA at PF 0.8 = 40.00 kW and 30.00 kVAr.
- At 400 V three-phase that draws 72.2 A.
Result:
| Real power (kW) | 40.00 |
|---|---|
| Reactive power (kVAr) | 30.00 |
| Current (A) | 72.2 |
| Phase angle (degrees) | 36.87 |
