Telecom Site Energy Cost Calculator (Grid, Diesel, Solar) by TheCalcTools

How the Telecom Site Energy Cost Calculator (Grid, Diesel, Solar) works

Choose the power mode: CP only, CP + DG, CP + solar, or CP + DG + solar.

Enter the grid kWh and tariff from the electricity bill, plus any fixed charges and taxes.

For DG sites enter diesel litres, price and the generator’s kWh per litre; for solar sites enter solar kWh and its cost per kWh.

The calculator adds each source’s cost and divides by total energy to give the blended cost per kWh, in PKR and USD.

The formula

Grid cost = (grid kWh × tariff + fixed charges) × (1 + tax)Diesel cost = litres × price per litre; DG energy = litres × kWh per litre

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

How is the site powered?CP + diesel generator (DG)
Billing period (days)30
Grid energy on the bill (kWh)2400 kWh
Grid tariff (PKR per kWh, all-in)Rs62
Fixed and other bill charges (PKR)Rs0
Extra tax not already in the rate (%)0 %
Diesel used (litres)350 L
Diesel price (PKR per litre)Rs275
Generator output (kWh per litre)3.2
Solar energy used (kWh)600 kWh
Solar cost (PKR per kWh: O&M or levelised)Rs6
Exchange rate (PKR per USD)280
  1. Grid: 2,400 kWh × Rs 62 = $148,800. Diesel: 350 L × Rs 275 = $96,250.
  2. Total energy cost = $245,050 (about $875.18 USD).
  3. Energy used = 3,520 kWh, so the blended cost is Rs 69.62 per kWh; diesel supplies 31.8% of it.

Result:

Grid cost (PKR)Rs 148,800
Diesel cost (PKR)Rs 96,250
Solar cost (PKR)Rs 0
Total energy cost (PKR)Rs 245,050
Total energy cost (USD)$875.18
Total energy used (kWh)3,520
Blended cost (PKR per kWh)69.62
Cost per day (PKR)Rs 8,168
Annualised cost (PKR)Rs 2,981,442
Diesel share of energy31.8%
If all energy came from the grid (PKR)Rs 218,240
Hybrid vs grid-only (PKR, negative = saving)Rs 26,810

Frequently asked questions

Which tariff should I enter?

The effective rate on your bill is best: total electricity charges divided by units (kWh). If you enter the base tariff, add GST and other taxes in the tax field.

How do I find my generator's kWh per litre?

Divide the energy it supplied (kWh from the genset meter or from load × run hours) by the litres consumed. Diesel gensets usually deliver around 3–3.8 kWh per litre at moderate load.

Why is DG so expensive per kWh?

At Rs 275 per litre and 3.2 kWh per litre, diesel energy costs about Rs 86 per kWh before maintenance, usually more than grid or solar energy.

How is solar cost counted?

Solar energy has almost no fuel cost, so enter your O&M cost or the levelised cost per kWh (capital cost spread over lifetime output). Enter 0 to ignore it.
