Class and private-range checks follow RFC 1918 and RFC 6598.

Frequently asked questions
Why convert an IP to decimal?
Some databases and firewalls store IPv4 addresses as a single 32-bit integer so ranges can be compared numerically.
Are address classes still used?
Not for routing, since CIDR replaced them, but the terms are still used when talking about private ranges.
