Angular Velocity Calculator (RPM, rad/s, Linear Speed) by TheCalcTools
How the Angular Velocity Calculator (RPM, rad/s, Linear Speed) works
One revolution is 2π radians, so ω = RPM × 2π ÷ 60. A point at radius r moves at v = ωr and accelerates toward the centre at ω²r.
That acceleration is why grinding wheels and fans have maximum safe speeds.
The formula
ω = 2π × RPM ÷ 60; v = ωr; a = ω²r
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Rotation speed (RPM) | 3000 |
|---|---|
| Radius (m) | 0.15 |
- 3,000 RPM = 314.16 rad/s.
- At 0.15 m the rim moves at 47.12 m/s with 1,509.6 g of centripetal acceleration.
Result:
| Angular velocity (rad/s) | 314.16 |
|---|---|
| Degrees per second | 18,000.0 |
| Frequency (Hz) | 50.00 |
| Rim speed (m/s) | 47.12 |
| Rim speed (km/h) | 169.6 |
| Centripetal acceleration (g) | 1,509.6 |
Frequently asked questions
