LED Bulb Savings Calculator by TheCalcTools
How the LED Bulb Savings Calculator works
Savings = number of bulbs × watts saved × hours per year. A 60 W incandescent bulb gives about the same light as an 8 to 9 W LED (about 800 lumens).
LEDs also last far longer (often 15,000 to 25,000 hours against about 1,000 for incandescent), which adds savings not counted here.
The formula
kWh saved = bulbs × (old W − LED W) × hours/day × 365 ÷ 1000
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Number of bulbs | 10 |
|---|---|
| Old bulb power (W) | 60 |
| LED power (W) | 8.5 |
| Hours on per day | 4 |
| Electricity price per kWh | $0.18 |
| Price per LED bulb | $3 |
- 10 bulbs × 51.5 W × 4 h × 365 = 752 kWh a year, saving $135.34.
- The LEDs pay for themselves in 2.7 months.
Result:
| Yearly saving | $135.34 |
|---|---|
| Energy saved per year (kWh) | 752 |
| Payback time (months) | 2.7 |
| Energy reduction | 86% |
Frequently asked questions
How do I match brightness?
Compare lumens, not watts: 450 lm ≈ 40 W incandescent, 800 lm ≈ 60 W, 1,600 lm ≈ 100 W.
