EV Range Calculator (Battery, Efficiency and Weather) by TheCalcTools

How the EV Range Calculator (Battery, Efficiency and Weather) works

Range = usable energy ÷ consumption. Energy available is the battery capacity times the charge between your starting level and the reserve you want to keep.

Consumption rises at high speed (air drag) and in cold weather (cabin heating and battery chemistry). The condition factors are typical planning allowances; your car’s trip computer gives your real figure.

The formula

Range (km) = battery kWh × (start % − reserve %) ÷ (kWh per 100 km × conditions) × 100

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Usable battery capacity (kWh)75
Starting charge90 %
Charge to keep in reserve10 %
Consumption (kWh per 100 km)17
ConditionsMild weather, mixed driving
  1. 75 kWh × (90% − 10%) = 60 kWh available.
  2. At 17 kWh/100 km: 353 km (219 miles).

Result:

Range (km)353
Range (miles)219
Energy available (kWh)60.0
Efficiency (km per kWh)5.88
Miles per kWh3.66

Frequently asked questions

Why is my winter range lower?

Heating the cabin and battery uses energy, and cold batteries deliver less. A heat pump reduces the loss.
