Centrifuge RPM to RCF (g-Force) Calculator by TheCalcTools

How the Centrifuge RPM to RCF (g-Force) Calculator works

Relative centrifugal force depends on both speed and radius: RCF = 1.118 × 10⁻⁵ × r (cm) × RPM². Protocols give × g because the same RPM produces different forces in different rotors.

Use the radius from the rotor centre to the sample (the maximum radius for pelleting).

The formula

RCF = 1.118 × 10⁻⁵ × r × RPM²; RPM = √(RCF ÷ (1.118 × 10⁻⁵ × r))

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

ConvertRPM to RCF (× g)
Speed (RPM)3000
Relative centrifugal force (× g)1000
Rotor radius (to the sample)10
  1. 3,000 RPM at 10 cm: 1.118 × 10⁻⁵ × 10 × 3,000² = 1,006 × g.

Result:

RCF (× g)1,006
Speed (RPM)3,000

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the rotor radius?

In the centrifuge or rotor manual, usually as r_max in mm or cm.
