How the Roman Numeral Converter works
Roman numerals use I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1,000. A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted, but only in six pairs: IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400) and CM (900).
The converter writes numbers greedily from the largest value down, and accepts only numerals in this standard form, so non-standard spellings such as IIII or IC are rejected.
Worked example
1994 = M + CM + XC + IV = MCMXCIV.
Frequently asked questions
How do you write 2026 in Roman numerals?
MMXXVI: 1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1.
Why does it stop at 3,999?
Larger numbers need a bar over the symbols (multiplying by 1,000), which is not part of the standard modern form.
