How the Mean, Median and Mode Calculator works
The mean is the sum of the values divided by how many there are. It uses every value, so one very large or small number pulls it a long way.
The median is the middle value once the list is sorted. With an even count it is the average of the two middle values. It is not affected by extreme values, which is why it is used for incomes and house prices.
The mode is the value that appears most often. A list can have one mode, several modes, or none if every value appears once. The range is the largest value minus the smallest.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Your numbers | 12, 15, 15, 18, 20, 22, 25, 25, 25, 30 |
|---|
- Sum = 207, count = 10, so the mean = 207 ÷ 10 = 20.7.
- Sorted, the two middle values are 20 and 22, so the median is 21.0.
- 25 appears three times, more than any other value, so the mode is 25.
Result:
| Mean (average) | 20.7000 |
|---|---|
| Median | 21.0000 |
| Mode | 25 |
| Range | 18.0000 |
| Minimum | 12.0000 |
| Maximum | 30.0000 |
| Count | 10 |
| Sum | 207.0000 |
| Sorted values | 12, 15, 15, 18, 20, 22, 25, 25, 25, 30 |
Frequently asked questions
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
Use the median when the data are skewed or contain outliers, such as salaries or house prices. The mean is best for roughly symmetric data without extreme values.
What if two values are tied for the most frequent?
Then the data set is bimodal and both values are listed as modes. If every value appears exactly once, there is no mode.
Can I paste a column from Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Copy the cells and paste them into the box. Values can be separated by new lines, commas, spaces or semicolons. Do not use commas as thousands separators.
