How the eGFR Calculator (CKD-EPI 2021) works
Enter sex, age and serum creatinine in mg/dL.
The 2021 CKD-EPI equation no longer uses race.
Staging also needs albuminuria and persistence over three months, so the stage shown is only a guide.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Sex | Male |
|---|---|
| Age (years) | 50 |
| Serum creatinine (mg/dL) | 1 |
- For a 50-year-old man with creatinine 1.0 mg/dL: κ = 0.9, so Scr/κ = 1.11.
- eGFR = 142 × 1.11^−1.2 × 0.9938^50 = 91.7 mL/min/1.73 m².
- Stage by eGFR alone: G1 (90 or more).
Result:
| eGFR (mL/min/1.73 m²) | 91.7 |
|---|---|
| CKD stage by eGFR alone | G1 (90 or more) |
Frequently asked questions
Is a low eGFR always chronic kidney disease?
No. Diagnosis requires an abnormal value for over three months and consideration of other markers. Dehydration, medicines and muscle mass can affect creatinine.
Why was race removed from the equation?
The 2021 NKF–ASN task force recommended a race-free equation to avoid assigning race as a biological variable.
