How GPA is Calculated (Formula)
Quality Points = Credit Hours × Grade Point Value
Cumulative GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours
Grade Point Scale (4.0 Scale with +/-)
Real Example
Sample Semester:
- Course: Calculus I — 4 credits, Grade B (3.0) → Quality Points: 12.0
- Course: English 101 — 3 credits, Grade A (4.0) → Quality Points: 12.0
- Course: History 201 — 3 credits, Grade B+ (3.3) → Quality Points: 9.9
- Course: Chemistry Lab — 1 credit, Grade A- (3.7) → Quality Points: 3.7
Calculation:
- Total Quality Points: 12.0 + 12.0 + 9.9 + 3.7 = 37.6
- Total Credit Hours: 4 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 11
- Cumulative GPA: 37.6 ÷ 11 = 3.42

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good GPA?
Typical benchmarks:
– 3.5+ — Excellent (cum laude, honors)
– 3.0-3.49 — Good (B average)
– 2.5-2.99 — Satisfactory
– 2.0-2.49 — Minimum for most colleges (C average)
– <2.0 — Academic probation risk
What’s the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA (this calculator): Uses standard 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. AP/IB/Honors courses count the same as regular courses.
Weighted GPA: Adds extra points for AP/IB/Honors (e.g., A in AP = 5.0). Check your school’s policy.
How can I raise my GPA?
Strategies to improve GPA:
– Focus on high-credit courses — 4-credit classes impact GPA more than 1-credit labs
– Retake failed courses — many schools replace F with new grade
– Use grade replacement policies — check your university’s rules
– Take summer courses — lighten load, focus on difficult subjects
– Meet with professors/TAs — office hours help understanding
Does this calculator include plus/minus grades?
Yes — this calculator uses a full +/- scale: A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, F. Some schools use different +/- ranges; check your institution’s policy.
What if my school uses a different grading scale?
Common variations:
– Some schools don’t have A-: A = 4.0 only
– Some schools have A+: A+ = 4.0 (or 4.33)
– Pass/Fail courses: Don’t affect GPA (enter 0 credits or exclude)
– Withdrawals (W): Don’t affect GPA (exclude from calculation)
