Tire Cost per Mile Calculator by TheCalcTools
How the Tire Cost per Mile Calculator works
Cost per mile = (tire price + fitting) ÷ tread life. A dearer tire with a longer tread-life warranty can be cheaper per mile.
Tires also age: most makers advise replacement after 6 to 10 years regardless of tread. Check tread depth and pressure monthly.
The formula
Cost per mile = (price + installation) ÷ tread life
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Price for a set of 4 | $720 |
|---|---|
| Mounting, balancing and disposal | $100 |
| Expected tread life (miles) | 60000 |
| Miles driven per year | 12000 |
| Alternative set price | $520 |
| Alternative tread life (miles) | 40000 |
- 720 + 100 over 60,000 miles: $0.0137 a mile, $164 a year at 12,000 miles.
- The alternative costs $0.0155 a mile: First set is better value.
Result:
| Cost per mile | $0.0137 |
|---|---|
| Cost per year | $164 |
| Years until replacement | 5.0 |
| Alternative cost per mile | $0.0155 |
| Better value | First set |
