How the Wall Stud Calculator (Studs and Plates) works
One stud every 16 (or 24) inches along the wall, plus one at the end: ⌊length × 12 ÷ spacing⌋ + 1. Corners and wall intersections need extra studs for backing, and each opening needs king and jack studs.
Walls usually have one bottom plate and a doubled top plate, three times the wall length. Check local code for spacing, stud size and headers.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Wall length (ft) | 24 |
|---|---|
| Stud spacing on centre | 16 in |
| Corners or wall intersections | 2 |
| Doors and windows | 2 |
| Extra for waste | 10 % |
- A 24 ft wall at 16 in on centre needs 19 studs, plus 8 for corners and openings.
- With 10% waste, buy 30.
Result:
| Studs to buy | 30 |
|---|---|
| Studs on the layout | 19 |
| Plates: bottom plus double top (linear ft) | 72 |
| Extra studs for corners and openings | 8 |
