How the Dog Age Calculator works
Enter your dog’s age in years and choose its size.
The size-based rule counts 15 human years for year one, 9 for year two, then a fixed number per dog year that rises with size.
The epigenetic formula comes from a 2019 study of DNA methylation changes in Labrador retrievers: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Dog's age (years) | 5 |
|---|---|
| Dog size | Medium (20–50 lb) |
- Size-based: 24 + (5 − 2) × 5 = 39.0 human years.
- Epigenetic: 16 × ln(5) + 31 = 56.8.
- The old 7× rule would say 35.0.
Result:
| Human years (size-based) | 39.0 |
|---|---|
| Human years (epigenetic formula) | 56.8 |
| Simple 7× rule | 35.0 |
Frequently asked questions
Is the 7-years-per-dog-year rule accurate?
No. Dogs mature much faster in the first two years and then age more slowly, so a flat multiplier is a rough guide at best.
Why do large dogs age faster?
Large breeds tend to have shorter lifespans, so each year counts for more. The epigenetic formula was built on one breed and does not adjust for size.
Does this replace vet advice?
No. Use it for fun and rough context. Your vet can advise on age-appropriate care.
