Solar PV Sizing for a Telecom Site by TheCalcTools
How the Solar PV Sizing for a Telecom Site works
Enter the site’s average load and the share you want solar to supply.
Daily solar energy needed is load × 24 h × share.
Array size = daily energy ÷ (peak sun hours × performance ratio). Battery energy covers the night autonomy.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Site load (kW, average) | 3 |
|---|---|
| Share of load to cover with solar (%) | 60 % |
| Peak sun hours per day | 5.2 |
| System performance ratio | 0.75 |
| Panel power (W) | 550 |
| Panel area (m²) | 2.58 |
| Night battery autonomy (hours) | 4 |
| Battery usable DoD (%) | 80 % |
- Energy = 3 kW × 24 h × 60% = 43.2 kWh/day.
- Array = 11.08 kWp = 21 panels of 550 W using about 54 m².
- Night battery: 15.0 kWh usable.
Result:
| Solar energy needed (kWh/day) | 43.2 |
|---|---|
| Array size (kWp) | 11.08 |
| Panels needed | 21 |
| Roof/ground area (m²) | 54 |
| Battery for night load (kWh usable) | 15.0 |
Frequently asked questions
What is the performance ratio?
The share of ideal output that actually reaches the load after temperature, soiling, wiring and inverter losses, typically 0.70–0.82.
Where do I find peak sun hours?
Use your site’s solar-irradiance data, such as the Global Solar Atlas, for the exact location and tilt.
