How the NFL Passer Rating Calculator works
The NFL formula scores four parts per attempt: completion rate, yards, touchdowns and interceptions. Each part is capped between 0 and 2.375.
The four parts are added, divided by 6 and multiplied by 100. A perfect rating is 158.3. College football uses a different formula.

Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Pass attempts | 35 |
|---|---|
| Completions | 24 |
| Passing yards | 285 |
| Touchdown passes | 2 |
| Interceptions | 1 |
- Parts: a = 1.929, b = 1.286, c = 1.143, d = 1.661.
- Rating = (1.929 + 1.286 + 1.143 + 1.661) ÷ 6 × 100 = 100.3.
Result:
| Passer rating | 100.3 |
|---|---|
| Completion % | 68.6% |
| Yards per attempt | 8.14 |
| Completion component | 1.929 |
| Yards component | 1.286 |
| Touchdown component | 1.143 |
| Interception component | 1.661 |
