How the CHA₂DS₂-VASc Score Calculator works
The score adds one point each for congestive heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, age 65 to 74 and female sex, and two points for age 75 or over and for prior stroke or TIA.
Higher scores mean a higher yearly stroke risk in atrial fibrillation. Decisions about blood thinners also weigh bleeding risk and personal factors, and must be made with a clinician.
The formula
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
| Age (years) | 70 |
|---|---|
| Sex | Male |
| Heart failure or LV dysfunction | No |
| High blood pressure | Yes (+1) |
| Diabetes | No |
| Prior stroke, TIA or thromboembolism | No |
| Vascular disease (prior heart attack, peripheral artery disease, aortic plaque) | No |
- A 70-year-old man with high blood pressure: 1 (age) + 1 (hypertension) = 2.
Result:
| CHA₂DS₂-VASc score | 2 |
|---|---|
| Points from age | 1 |
| Guideline threshold reached? | Score at or above the level where guidelines generally recommend discussing anticoagulation |
Frequently asked questions
Why does female sex add a point?
Women with atrial fibrillation have a higher stroke risk when other risk factors are present; female sex alone (score 1) is not usually an indication for treatment.
