How the Blood Pressure Category Calculator (AHA 2017) works

The 2017 American Heart Association / American College of Cardiology guideline classifies blood pressure by the higher of the two categories that the systolic and diastolic readings fall in.

Diagnosis is based on the average of two or more readings on two or more occasions. Readings above 180/120 need prompt medical attention, especially with symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath.

The formula

Category = the more severe of the systolic and diastolic categories

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator:

Systolic (top number, mmHg)128
Diastolic (bottom number, mmHg)82
  1. 128/82: systolic is Elevated but diastolic 82 is Stage 1, so the category is Stage 1 hypertension.
  2. Pulse pressure 46 mmHg; MAP 97 mmHg.

Result:

CategoryStage 1 hypertension
Pulse pressure (mmHg)46
Mean arterial pressure (mmHg)97
